Biosolids and Sewage Sludge Management

Cache Environmental Laboratories, PC (CEL) has more than 30-years’ experience in providing regulatory and technical support to public health, agricultural and water reclamation agencies in developing, implementing and monitoring biosolids beneficial use programs.

Regulatory Support

CEL experts recently contributed to a national scientific review of an EPA-proposed approach to evaluate the public health risks posed by emerging biosolids contaminants (such as PFAS). The newly completed report (August 31, 2023) entitled “Science Advisory Board’s Review of EPA’s Standardized Framework for Sewage Sludge Chemical Risk Assessment” may be accessed in the button below:

CEL continues to provide valuable training to biosolids stakeholders including agricultural producers, public health agencies, wastewater treatment facilities and private consultants. Expert biosolids training information may be found in these recently (2023) released CEL publications:

  • Biosolids Land Applier Certification Workbook
  • Biosolids Quality Protection and Surface Disposal Training

These books are available for purchase on Amazon and can be accessed through our "Training Books" page or through the button below:

Technical Support

CEL is providing technical guidance of how to technically convert a large, highly disturbed sewage sludge surface disposal site into an area legally supported for commercial development.  Under CEL’s direction, the excavation and land application of nearly 3 million cubic feet of sewage sludge is being executed following the national sewage sludge regulations found within the United States (US) Clean Water Act (Title 40 US Code of Federal Regulation Part 503).

CEL biosolids experts have developed the site sampling plans and data interpretation methods using the EPA Quality System framework.

For nearly 30 years, CEL biosolids experts have collaborated with the EPA and the US Department of Agriculture in evaluating numerous biosolids beneficial scenarios to ensure that the potential risks to public health are minimal.
